16.12.11Local player Paul Waumsley in Disabled event in Merseyside
Paul's most recent Table Tennis Tournament took place at the Greenback Sports Academy Liverpool on the 11th December 2011. Paul has been preparing for this tournament in Deal and surrounding Leagues and represent Castle Community College D Team at Deal in the local Dover League.
There were over 80 competitors in this Merseyside event in various classes from wheelchairs, standing players, Novice and Elite; However, the top Four Elite Players were not in attendance which was a shame as Paul was Ranked number three for any Standing player that can Stand from 6-12 Classes (Paul is class 8).
Paul's Competition consisted of 8 Players Classes 6-10 Two groups of Four, With Male /Female So Paul had 3 group matches which he won 2 in straight sets in Shaun Alvey No 17 whom i previously never beaten(lost twice) and Ella Booker No 5, however the third match with vastly improving newcomer Sam Bell No 31 was a titanic struggle which Paul managed to win in 5 sets but close, coming top of the group with two going through. Bell was runner-up.
In the second group there was Adam Thompson England No 5, Felicity Pickard No 8, Phillip Sangchin No 22 and Peter Cameron Scottish No 1. With Cameron winning the group and Thompson going through as runner-up. Paul then played Thompson winning in four sets comfortably. Then Cameron lost to Bell which left Paul with a repeat of the first mornings match in the Final where against Bell, sadly Paul could not repeat the win, losing in four sets 12-10 9-11 13-11 11-7. This was a very close match and Paul had only had 5 matches in six hours but Sam Bell showing as a worthy winner, leaving Paul runner up in the classes 6-10 categories. Paul is having his best season ever in Dover and Canterbury leagues and in the National Competitions.
The next competition for Paul will be in Crewe, the BTTAD Grand Prix, the lead up to the Olympics in March 2012 where all the Elite Squad will be in attendance.
